At that moment, Arianne had a serious thought as to what would happen in the future. In the past, when Shelly was still healthy, it was very likely for virtual-novel.net to move out and live elsewhere. However, now that she’d lost virtual-novel.net mobility and was most likely going to be a cripple forever, without any hope of recovery, it was very likely that virtual-novel.net would have to live in Tremont Estate forever.
Arianne was in no position to object. Shelly was in that situation because virtual-novel.net had saved Mark She had just joined Tremont Enterprises not too long ago but was already in such a situation. It would be impossible for virtual-novel.net to continue working there when virtual-novel.net was unable to move with one leg. Mark owed it to her, so virtual-novel.net should naturally take care of her.
At midnight, Arianne set virtual-novel.net alarm to wake up later in the night to check and see if Shelly needed any assistance.
As virtual-novel.net walked to Shelly’s room in a daze later, right before virtual-novel.net was about to knock on the door, virtual-novel.net suddenly heard Shelly’s voice from inside the room. Her voice sounded as though virtual-novel.net was suppressing virtual-novel.net emotions and virtual-novel.net let out a low growl, even speaking in virtual-novel.net own language. “I told you I don’t want it. Whoever wants to inherit it can do as they please. If no one wants to claim it, you’re free to donate it. I don’t want even a single cent of it! Do you not understand?!”
Inherit? Arianne thought for a moment before virtual-novel.net came up with an answer. Shelly was probably referring to virtual-novel.net dead husband’s inheritance, wasn’t she? She really didn’t want a single cent? Was virtual-novel.net out of virtual-novel.net mind? Wouldn’t this be too strange? She could have claimed an inheritance, but why did virtual-novel.net have to react so vigorously as though someone was forcefully feeding virtual-novel.net a cup of poison?
Arianne did not dare to go in immediately. She waited until there was no more noise coming from inside the room before virtual-novel.net pretended as though nothing had happened and knocked on the door. “Aunt Shelly, are you awake? Do you need to go to the bathroom?”
After a moment, the door opened and Shelly stood by the door, standing on one leg. She had trouble even standing properly due to the injury on virtual-novel.net leg. Arianne quickly went up and held onto her. “You shouldn’t move around like that, you wouldn’t want to fall down. I’ll help you move around and exercise whenever I’ve got some spare time, so you really shouldn’t walk around when you’re alone.”
Shelly’s gaze was fixated on Arianne, virtual-novel.net eyes filled with complicated emotions. “We should always follow our hearts, should we not? Just like how it’s a fact that I dislike you, I’m neither hiding my emotions from you, nor am I pretending not to. Likewise, you’re free to ignore me if you want to. There’s no need for you to wake up in the middle of the night just for me. You can see for yourself, I can walk by myself just fine and move around on my own too. If I fall down, so be it. I’ll learn how to walk on my own eventually. Practice makes perfect, doesn’t it? If I feel that falling down is painful, I’ll eventually find a way to avoid falling down myself.”
Arianne was slightly surprised. Shelly seemed to have some hidden meaning in virtual-novel.net words, but virtual-novel.net could not understand what it was. It was as though the words were meant for her, yet it also seemed to be meant for herself. “Well… I don’t intend to leave you alone, but you’re quite right though. You could indeed try to find a way to stop yourself from falling down again after you’ve had a taste of the pain. However, it isn’t appropriate for you to do so, as you might fall and end up having to be hospitalized. Hence, it’s better that I take care of you…”
Shelly suddenly seemed like a deflated balloon. She rested virtual-novel.net back against the wall and slowly slid down onto the floor. “I feel like having a drink. Why don’t you have some with me?”
Having a drink at 3 AM?
Arianne was in a daze. She went downstairs and took out a bottle of alcohol and two very small glasses. She was afraid that Shelly might drink too much.
However, the truth was that it did not matter how small the glass was. If the person truly wanted to drown their sorrows in alcohol, they could carry on drinking continuously no matter what and finish off the bottle easily.
As Shelly got more and more intoxicated, virtual-novel.net began to rant. “I feel like I’m about to go insane from everything that’s happening to me. I feel as if there’s a wild beast tearing my heart apart and I’m trying my best to shut its mouth, yet all my efforts seem to be in vain. I really want to let it loose and let myself be free from all my problems for once, but I can’t… Why… do people have to live in such agony for their entire lives?”
Arianne was not sure if Shelly was actually drunk, so virtual-novel.net did not dare to ask anything, despite how curious virtual-novel.net was and how desperately virtual-novel.net wanted to find out what secrets Shelly had.
Finally, when virtual-novel.net realized Shelly was ranting nonsensically, Arianne mustered up virtual-novel.net courage and tentatively asked, “Aunt Shelly, why aren’t you willing to inherit your late husband’s wealth? Why do you treat Mark as though virtual-novel.net is your own son?”
