For such demanding research, half a day was really too short.
Thomas had recruited the best doctors and researchers he could find to work on a detailed study of Ancestral Water.
In the past, it was difficult to achieve breakthroughs in the research on Ancestral Water. That was because figuring out how to create an antidote for the Ancestral Water was challenging. On the other hand, it was also because obtaining the Ancestral Water was incredibly difficult. Because they only had a few samples, the results were underwhelming. However, it was different now.
Because the entire city’s water supply had been turned into Ancestral Water, they were able to collect the samples at their convenience. This made it much easier for Thomas and the others to get the materials.
With Thomas in charge, hundreds of researchers were conducting a massive study in just half a day. Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan. Thomas still failed.
“We almost got it…”
“We were so close to making it!”
Thomas sighed heavily.
Actually, their research was ninety-nine percent complete, and with only one percent to go before they could finish it. But they still could not make it.
Firstly, they had a tight deadline to meet; Secondly, the key one percent left of progress was impossible to deal with. Even when a hundred of the world’s best researchers were assembled, they still were not able to make a breakthrough.
Ancestral Water was truly the world’s number one poison.
Something much more frightening had occurred. Following Thomas and the others’ failure, there were already people who died because they could not bear the toxicity of the Ancestral Water.
Luck had begun his attack.
Because the people were scared of Luck, they started to focus on Thomas.
“Sacrifice Thomas, and save a million people’s lives!”
“Thomas, don’t be a coward and come out! You can’t let a million people die just because of you. You have to take responsibility for the citizens of more than ten cities. Come out!”
A large number of citizens gathered around the hospital and started cursing and shouting.
The fear of death blinded them. So what was the big deal about sacrificing Thomas, as long as they could stay alive?
All kinds of nasty words spewed out of their mouths. Their only aim was to have Thomas die as quickly as possible. Once Thomas died, Luck would stop, and they would survive.
These people had completely forgotten how hard Thomas had worked for the city and how much effort he had put into ensuring their happiness. All they knew was that if Thomas died, they would all live.
More and more citizens began to gather, and the hospital was surrounded by a huge crowd. No one was able to enter or leave. Even if a large number of policemen arrived, they would still be unable to control such a large crowd.
The situation was critical.
At the hospital, Eric slammed his fist onto the table and yelled, “These people really have no sense of morality! Do they not know how much Thomas contributed to Celandine City? They couldn’t care less. All they worry about is saving their own life!”
“Besides, do they think they will live if Thomas dies? Thomas is the one and only person on the planet who can create an antidote for Ancestral Water. It was obvious that Luck was using Ancestral Water to kill Thomas and destroy our only hope.”
“Why won’t this bunch of morons understand this?”
“It’s not that they don’t understand,” Thomas said calmly as he approached him. “It’s just that they didn’t have any other options.”
The appointed time had arrived, and someone was dying every passing minute as a result of the Ancestral Water’s poison. They had no choice under the prospect of death.
The only way they thought they could survive was to surround the hospital and force Thomas to commit suicide.
Luck was the one to blame.
