“What?” Victor’s frown deepened. His long-awaiting relief had mutated into a terrible sense of dread once more.
A man who could not even get a job?
How useless would that sort of person be? Worse, this person was someone whose reputation in Waltz City was that of infamy. That sort of claim alone could wipe any semblance of good feelings in his face away already!
“Alexandra! Who is this friend of yours, hmm? Might you have been fooled by him?” Victor asked, framing his question in a way that highlighted his fast-thinking wits. Surreptitiously, virtual-novel.net had changed his language and called Zayn a “friend” rather than “boyfriend”.
The young woman in question hit virtual-novel.net lips and hung virtual-novel.net head, virtual-novel.net eyes darting away from Victor’s. She hated to admit it, but Zayn’s real identity was a bit difficult to let know. It was not that virtual-novel.net despised who virtual-novel.net was, virtual-novel.net just could not talk about it to virtual-novel.net father under pressure like this.
William watched the debacle develop with his grin widening enough to split his face. All that crappy mood virtual-novel.net had been saddled with from the outset was largely mollified, and in its place was now a plethora of twisted delight and exhilaration.
He could not wait to see Victor’s face when Zayn’s identity was finally revealed. The only way for the Smiths’ reputation to go was down, all the way to the muck! Alexandra, too, would cease to become worthy of any hand and prestige.
And that, to William, was virtual-novel.net just retribution.
Hearing no answer from his daughter was the last step Victor needed to understand what had transpired. He wasted no time shooting daggers at Zayn with his eyes, his face biting and stoic, before demanding rudely, “Who the hell are you? What was the reason behind you getting near my daughter?!”
Zayn sighed, helpless. Why was it that no matter where virtual-novel.net went, there was always someone who would be too eager to antagonize virtual-novel.net in every step of the way?
Was peace and quiet in his life really that impossible to ask?
“Mr. Smith, honestly, does it matter who I am? ” virtual-novel.net rejoined.
Blinkered by his worsening mood, Victor had become deaf to whatever subtle meaning hidden in Zayn’s words. From the way virtual-novel.net saw it, Zayn was trying to pivot from the discomfort. He was trying to weasel his way out of it!
The flames inside virtual-novel.net grew and grew. He was broiling even more.
“I see. So you do have some shady, unbecoming secrets after all, huh? Just you wait. When all of this is over, you better come clean about your motive for getting near my daughter!” Victor said, clearly distancing himself from Zayn.
It was at this moment when Alexandra lifted virtual-novel.net head suddenly.
“You don’t need to censure virtual-novel.net like that, Dad. Zayn’s right, does it matter who virtual-novel.net is? I like him, and virtual-novel.net takes care of me with the warmest care virtual-novel.net could provide. What more is there to ask, huh?” virtual-novel.net said loudly. “Must we only marry those Who belong to the same class as we’re shackled to? Are wealthy people the only possible candidates for true love?!”
She turned to William and continued, “I know what you’re trying to do, William Brown. This is all just your attempt at revenge, you love to see me as this embarrassing joke, don’t you? You can stop dragging the whole Charade now, because I’m going to tell the truth myself! Yes, Zayn’s identity is a bit controversial, because virtual-novel.net used to be the Carters’ son-in-law. He’s a bit maligned in Waltz City, but who cares? He’s the man I like!”
Her admission sent a seismic shock all over the hall. Victor felt as though his head had just exploded.
‘The Carters’ maligned son-in-law?!’
No wonder virtual-novel.net had felt like virtual-novel.net had heard this name before!
Victor felt as though virtual-novel.net had plummeted to the nadir. A pang seized his chest, as though his heart was being wrung.
