The effect took no time to happen. Faye’s general health seemed to improve at a visible rate after she swallowed the fruit.
“I… I feel so much better now, Zayn! I don’t feel so fatigued anymore!” she cried in earnest joy, her eyes widening and glimmering.
Zayn regarded the change overtaking her as a heartfelt smile surfaced to his lips. “That’s wonderful, honey.”
Faye closed her eyes. A shot of vitality spread from the naval through a web and into different parts of her body. It seeped into her innards and organs like a spring, she had never felt quite like this before!
Zayn ruffled her hair gently while she enjoyed the sensation. As she closed her eyes, she missed the rotating, flitting corridor of joy, relief, happiness, and regret.
He harbored no delusion of what awaits him after this. It would be no exaggeration to say that he exchanged his life for hers, and maybe it made him sound like the biggest idiot in the world.
He was a superior-class fourth tier legend, his life was infinitely more worthwhile than a dime-a-dozen young woman like Faye because of his endless future potential. It just seemed like an unequal exchange through and through.
Be that as it may, Zayn regretted nothing. It was the most equal decision he ever made in his life, he felt, and if anyone were to put him at the same spot a hundred times, he would choose the same without fail.
He counted the seconds mentally. It was almost time for Ezra to show up. He had to say goodbye now.
He looked at her with piercing, almost searching, eyes. He wanted to imprint her on the core of his soul, so that even as a ghost, he would remember her.
Faye’s eyes snapped open at this moment and met the unsettling eyes he had. “Zayn? I get this nagging feeling that I’m—”
She left her sentence hanging and eyed him more carefully. Her instincts were crying about her husband’s… abnormal attitude.
“Zayn? What’s the matter?” Faye questioned. Something was wrong, but what?
Zayn shook his head as he stuffed the sentiments brewing in his mind to the back of his head. “Nothing’s wrong! I’m just so happy for you!” he answered with a smile.
“Really?” Faye asked aloud. She had a feeling he was lying.
“Totally, babe!” Zayn cried out emphatically, his acting chops kicking in to rescue the situation.
Cupping Faye’s cheeks, he grinned. “When have I ever lie to you about anything, my silly hot wife! Alright, time’s a-wastin. You should get back to the hospital before mom and dad become too worried.”
Faye nodded. She would not want her parents to be worried, but more importantly, she could not wait to tell them about her recovery and watch them erupt in joy.
“Right! Let’s go together!”
He shook his head with a smile. “No, no. ’ve got a little bit of a loose end to tie yet, so I’m not gonna be able to go with you.”
“But… why?”
“Business as usual, honey,” he answered, feigning a casual demeanor without blinking an eye. “It’s boring, annoying work stuff, so you’re not missing out on any fun. No worries. I’ll see you again after it’s done.”
“Oh, and one more thing! Don’t tell anyone about what happened today, okay? Not even your parents. Okay?”
Faye was about to nod in agreement when Mr. Hyde received a call from outside the car, and whatever the content was, it twisted his expression into one of aghast.
He turned and looked at Zayn in disbelief.
