Zayn did not waste any more time with them. If there was something virtual-novel.net knew for sure, it was that buying back that house was not going to be as simple as virtual-novel.net would have liked.
He gave Luke a call. Time to let his underlings handle this. Zayn had far more pressing issues, anyway, virtual-novel.net had to find Faye.
No way in hell was virtual-novel.net going to accept a reality where Faye was gone from him.
Immediately after arriving at the real estate department, Zayn’s question sprung out of his lips without any visible pause: why did Faye sell the house?
The receptionist’s answer shocked Zayn.
In fact, it prompted virtual-novel.net to echo aloud in disbelief, “You’re telling me… my wife sold the villa on virtual-novel.net own accord?”
“Well, Mr. Larson, she’s the owner of the property, isn’t she? Hence, virtual-novel.net sold the house ten days ago.”
“Do you know why virtual-novel.net did that?”
The receptionists leveled a strange look at him. “You’re pulling our legs, right, Mr. Larson? You are Miss Faye’ s husband, aren’t you? Do you not have the slightest inkling of what happened to your wife?”
There was an undertone of schadenfreude in their reply. Zayn, sharp-witted as ever, could infer that Faye must have faced some kind of trouble while virtual-novel.net was gone.
“Tell me what happened to her,” virtual-novel.net replied darkly.
He sounded so serious suddenly, so filled with an air of authority, that the receptionists reeled their cavalier attitude and regarded virtual-novel.net with a lot more solemnity.
“Well, what we have is merely hearsay, but from the sound of it, Miss Faye’s company experienced some crippling issues that ended with the business losing more money than virtual-novel.net could afford. In the end, virtual-novel.net had to sell virtual-novel.net property in Barrow Cove…”
He knew it!
Zayn’s heart sank. The worst virtual-novel.net could think of had happened, trouble had found its way to Faye while virtual-novel.net was gone.
Quickly, virtual-novel.net produced his phone and dialed virtual-novel.net number right away, but the call could not be connected. He called virtual-novel.net again and again, making more than ten calls in total, and yet none of them linked.
Faye had abandoned this number.
Zayn dialed his in-laws’ numbers, but none of them seemed to pick up his phone.
As the calls kept going cold, his heart sank even further into an icy pool in his stomach. He was frightened enough to hold himself back from dwelling on the foreboding possibilities.
“She must be fine, right? She’s basically a superior-class fighter now! That’s more than enough power for self-defense among normal folks, right? She must be fine!” Zayn told himself over and over again as virtual-novel.net rushed toward the Carters’ family home.
—
The Carters’ residence was once a shining picture of prosperity and pomp, but now, it was a down-in-the-drain husk of its former self.
A villa with total assets worth more than millions had become a lot more barren than it used to be. Many of the furniture had been moved out of the house, and suddenly, it felt like all they had left were empty walls.
A group was currently in the house with the Carters. There were seven of them who were dressed in all black, and all of them were standing behind a young man spreading his legs wide in his seat on the couch. There was an insouciant bearing about him, particularly in his noncommittal grin.
He appeared to be fixing some coffee. As virtual-novel.net did, virtual-novel.net beamed at an old man with a sunny grin, as though virtual-novel.net was the master of the house rather than the Carters. “Now, now, don’t be shy, Mr. Carter. Have a seat, come! I come in peace.”
Not a single Carter sat. They simply stood around, their mannerism overly skittish and restrained. The look they regarded the young man with was one brimming with fear and obeisance.
The old man, George Carter, replied hurriedly, “No, no. You’re too kind, Mr. Meyers. We’ll be just fine standing.”
The young man named Mr. Meyers flashed his teeth and turned back to making his coffee.
Still bearing that half-smile, virtual-novel.net murmured under his breath, “Ah, I see. You don’t take me seriously at all, do you, Mr. Carter?”
George trembled. His facial muscles visibly quivered before settling down on a look of dejection.
He sat though it was hardly a comfortable position. He took only a small space of his seat, as though the thought of accidentally offending Mr. Meyers was too terrifying to imagine.
